Can’t believe it’s already been a year since I’ve been engaged! To celebrate, I thought it’d be nice to take a trip down memory lane and share my engagement story with you! First things first, Arvens nearly ruined the surprise due to all his antics! About a week prior, he called me in a frenzy, insisting that I make time for him to take me out and “do something special” to celebrate my 30th birthday. I was consumed with tending to a close friend who lost a parent unexpectedly, and he had just returned from a month long training with the military, so we were both quite busy. Of course, I couldn’t help but think that maybe he could be proposing however, I kept my cool, and left it at that. A few days later he told me when our date was set t happen, but left out the location, and said, “Be on time!”.
Fast forward to the day, it was a Saturday, I woke up feeling very sick, not fully sure if I’d be able to make it to church. Thankfully, I was able to muster up the strength to go. Afterwards, I went to my best friends house to chill for a few. I mentioned to her that Arvens and I had a date that he was unusually adamant about planning. She asked if I thought he was going to propose. Though I wasn’t too sure, I knew for that he’d been acting a bit strange!
Her sisters, who were also over, chimed in and told me to get home, so I could be on time for my date. Little did I know that they were all in on what was soon to come, hence why they rushed me out! Once I got home, I rushed and got myself ready because now I was running late from chatting it up (YIKES!). I quickly slipped on a black pencil midi dress from ASOS that I hadn’t worn yet. It was the perfect twist on the LBD with beautiful bold print (which he complimented me on the moment he saw me). Nemiah was my savior (per usual) getting things prepped for me as I ran back and forth like a mad woman. All that kept replaying in my mind was Arvens telling me not to be late. The last thing I wanted was to ruin his much anticipated date night, and miss our reservation, so I made a mad dash out the house. Per usual, he was as patient as can be and met up with me hassle-free to drive us there.
I still didn’t know where we were headed, but soon enough we pulled up to one of my favs, Darryl’s Corner Bar & Kitchen! Since I’m a huge fan of jazz and soul food, it was the perfect combo for a girl like me. As soon as we walked in, there was a woman singing Anita Baker. Needless to say, I was lost in the music early on. I did notice Arvens get up from the table a couple of times which got me thinking that maybe something was up (He is THE WORST at keeping his cool!). As the woman finished her set, she said she had a birthday shoutout to do, Lo’ and behold, it was for me! She serenaded me with the birthday song while the entire restaurant sang along. I was grinning from ear to ear. I couldn’t have been any cheesier.
Since the night was going so well, I finally gave in to my thoughts, and said to myself that this just might be my engagement night. Well, our dinner came, we ate, and he even threw in, “Babe, what’s your ring size again?”. At that point, any thoughts of him proposing were out the window. Deep down, I was frustrated with myself for believing that he would propose. I’m quite sure he picked up on my mood.
It happened to be “30s and up” night at the restaurant. Once the live jazz concluded, the DJ played all the hit 90s songs from when I grew up. Everyone who knows me knows I’m a sucker for 90s. The DJ played the hottest hits from the era. I thought, heck, if it’s not my engagement night, it’s gonna be a damn good birthday celebration! I literally danced the night away like no one was watching.
All the while, Arvens kept hinting for us to leave. Hit after hit kept coming on, and I kept telling him “just one more song babe, this is my jam”. About 30 songs in, and two crippled feet later, I figured it was time to make that shameless walk to the car, and go on home. My feet were on fire from dancing on them non stop. I kept telling Arvens to hold my hand tight, so I could use him as a crutch. I had vibed to jazz, ate amazing soul food, and danced the night away with my man; I was fully content with my non-engaged, foot throbbing self. My night was complete! I needed nothing else!
Then, Arvens took a tumble, and I mean, A TUMBLE, pants ripped, shoes scruffed, and all! I immediately reach out to help him, but notice a big grin on his face. Then, he pulls out a box and opens it…I literally start jumping, and screaming on the sidewalk outside the restaurant. So much so, that he had to ask if he could ask! LOL!! I gathered myself in order for him to do so, and of course you know, I said YES! The entire time he kept wanting to leave so he could pop the question, and here I was holding up my own proposal! HA!
Nonetheless, my feet were no longer an issue. I made it to the car in shock and awe because my guy pulled it off, and actually surprised me! He got me an aquamarine ring which is my parents’ birthstone. That was a year ago, and now, we’re three months away from our wedding day!
